The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved its use of the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to be sold as a generic drug to treat a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The approval comes amid a legal battle over how the drug is made and sold. The FDA has said it is working on a generic version of the drug in the United States.
A spokeswoman said the agency is working on the “legal version” of Viagra in the United States and it is awaiting the FDA decision.
Viagra, the brand name for the medication sildenafil citrate, treats erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. It is used by men between the ages of 18 and 64 to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and heart failure.
The drug has been shown to work by blocking phosphodiesterase type 5, a chemical that controls blood flow in the penis, as well as relaxing the smooth muscle in the blood vessels supplying blood to the penis. It also helps relax blood vessels in the lungs, which reduces the workload of the heart and blood vessels.
The FDA has not found any drug to be effective in treating the condition but Viagra and similar medicines may be able to help with symptoms of the condition.
